Cora NovoaES/CAT
First woman to win Best DJ of the Year in 2017 at Madrid's Vicious Music Awards, Cora Novoa is also one of her country's most creative producers. Born in Galicia, Spain, but having lived in Berlin, Madrid and Barcelona, Novoa developed her creative imagination through classical flute, hip-hop instrumentals and graffiti before finding her way into electronic music. With a university degree in information technology and a delight in the art of audio synthesis, she began working for Ableton as a certified trainer, continuing a relationship forged with the company while working at the microFusa music equipment store.
Since then, Novoa has been a regular contributor to El Laberinto, a Spanish national radio program, and since 2014 has run her own label and streetwear brand Seeking The Velvet. She also releases albums and EPs on Henry Saiz's Natura Sonoris and John Talabot's Hivern Discs labels and travels extensively throughout Europe and Latin America to share her musical approach. Working at the intersection of art and technology, Novoa's sound is unique. Bordering on dark and modular techno, this Spanish multidisciplinary artist offers magnetic and haunting atmospheres that appeal to her loyal audience.
This year at MUTEK, Cora Novoa presents to the Montréal public the modular audiovisual show that led her to festivals such as Sonar Barcelona, Tate-Modern Museum or Magnetic Fields India. This new live project is based on current concepts such as dystopia, techno-ethics, artificial intelligence and censorship. Fans of rave textures and dark techno will be charmed by its powerful visuals of great richness.
Presented as part of the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Cooperation between Catalonia and Québec with support from Institut Ramon Llull
